A lamp for every hour of the day
Il Polpo is an inexpensive and highly mobile lamp designed with the purpose of creating optimal light-conditions during every phase and need of the day.
The human body is designed to follow the rhythm of the sun. That’s why we get tired at night, and wake up at sunrise. But today when we’re spending most of our time indoors in artificial lit offices and living rooms, our body becomes confused, which can result in broken sleep patterns and problems focusing during the day.
Researchers have discovered that the colors of the light and the direction of which we are exposed of the light source, has a say in which hormones we produce.
Inspired by these discoveries I designed a lamp, that has different colors of light within itself. Depending on how you place the lamp, different colors of the light are filtered out. The possible positions of the lamp are designed so they match different expected tasks of the day.
By mixing the newest technology of light sources (narrow spectrum LEDs) with a mechanical and highly mobile lamp fixture, the design underlines the importance of the awareness of how different light influences our everyday life. There is a lot of pure technological solutions out there, that changes the color of the light automatically, but this lamp forces you to think about the influence the exposure of light has to your wellbeing, since you are changing the position according to the task at hand.
Furthermore the cheap and simple design, makes a good alternative to several other lamps you might wish to own. That makes it a perfect lamp for a younger user group with a limitation of space and needs of multi-functionality.
Simulating the light of a day
A great deal of research went into this project in order to understand the different moods and movements of the light during a day. The research included a trip to the mountains. Here the difference between morning and night, between midday and afternoon was especially evident.
The diagram below shows how the lamp’s position exposes the user to different colors and angles of the light. From the cool yellow light of the morning, coming from below, to the straight on full spectrum light during midday, to a more subtle and warmer red light of the night, just like a natural sunset.

The lamp is made in Stone Paper, which is a plastic-like paper that is made from limestone and natural adhesive. The material takes very little energy to produce, and is fully biodegradable.
